I Didn't Know What Nowhere Was, But Now I Do

We are staying in Burnettesville, IN for free at a family farm, The Freebird Farm and Homestead. It feels like we are in nowheresville, and I love it. Being from the city I never really understood the appeal of a small town. I am changing my mind and am falling in love with nowheresvilles all across the country.

To get here you must drive through cornfields that span dozens if not hundreds of miles. The corn stalks are tall and a beautiful green. They invite me to go for a run through them and ask me to lean into the feeling of being lost. I used to be afraid of feeling lost, but something is happening. I am changing. I am becoming comfortable and finding peace in the unknown and adventurous. I am falling in love with living in the here and now.

Freebird Farm and Homestead is owned and operated by Denise. She is a very sweet lady and welcoming. She has a farm that grows produce, herbs, livestock, and barnyard animals. They have a store where locally sourced and personally produced products are sold. We bought cinnamon and apple sausage links, a 3-pound chuck roast, ground beef, eggs, ginger root, natural cleaning supplies, homemade cider, jewelry, and so much more. Denise's place has everything you need.

As a city guy, everything you want just shows up in the grocery store. I haven't had an appreciation for how it actually gets there. It comes from places like Burnetteville, IN. Denise told me what products come from what farms and who the families are that own those farms. She talked about how important it is for her family to be self-sufficient and provide for themselves. I could really tell how much she loved her community and the people that lived around her. They were a family and they were there for one another.

I am so glad I became a member of Harvest Hosts so I could meet Denise, stay at Freebird Farms and Homestead, and fall in love with an amazing city in the great USA.
